Frequently Asked Questions

What is engineered hardwood flooring?+

Engineered hardwood is a real wood floor built in layers. A hardwood top layer is bonded to a stable core, so the plank keeps the look and feel of natural wood while holding its shape better in changing conditions.

What is the difference between engineered hardwood and solid hardwood?−

Both use real wood, but engineered hardwood has a layered construction that provides additional dimensional stability. Solid hardwood is made from a single piece of wood throughout.

Where can engineered hardwood be installed?+

It suits most rooms in the home, including spaces where solid hardwood is less practical, such as basements and areas over concrete subfloors. Rooms exposed to standing water are still better served by other materials.

Can engineered hardwood be installed over radiant heating?+

In most cases yes. The layered construction handles the temperature changes of in-floor heating better than solid wood. The product guidelines and subfloor temperature limits should be followed for the specific floor chosen.

Can engineered hardwood be refinished?+

That depends on the thickness of the top wear layer. Thicker wear layers can be sanded and refinished, while thinner ones are usually maintained with a light recoat instead.
